Pulling Handles

Pulling Handles
Many people use a mug every day. Many people have strong opinions about them too.
Yet behind that familiarity sits a surprising number of decisions. How does the handle relate to the body? What makes a mug comfortable to hold? How do balance, proportion and weight influence the experience of using it?
In this practical workshop, you’ll explore the relationship between handle and form while learning techniques for pulling, refining and attaching handles.
Drawing on examples from his personal collection, Robert Hunter will discuss different approaches to handle design before demonstrating the process of pulling and attaching handles. You’ll then experiment with making and attaching multiple handles to prepared mug forms, allowing time to compare different approaches and develop confidence through repetition.
This is a skills-focused workshop designed to develop understanding and technique. Participants will work on prepared forms for practice and experimentation. No finished pieces will be produced or fired as part of the session.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a better understanding of how handles influence the function, appearance and feel of a mug, along with practical techniques to apply in your own making.
Suitable for makers with some experience of clay.
