Modular Moulds - Introduction to Mould-making with Nova Smith

Modular Moulds - Introduction to Mould-making with Nova Smith
A focused workshop exploring practical, studio-friendly plaster mould-making for ceramic makers. This course takes a low-tech, repeatable approach, prioritising processes that can be continued at Sunken Studio or at home.
Led by Nova Smith, a silversmith and designer maker, Modular Moulds draws on shared mould-making principles across ceramics and silversmithing. Alongside hands-on making, the workshop explores how modular forms are planned, divided, refined, and reassembled using simple tools and materials.
The emphasis is on understanding and experimentation rather than finished outcomes. Some prior experience working with clay is helpful, but no previous mould-making experience is required.
Projects and research by Nova Smith.
Requirements
Participants are required to bring a Half Mask P3 respirator for working with plaster.
What’s included
The session focuses on the principles of mould making within a shared studio context.
Participants will:
→ make a plaster mould during the workshop
→ be introduced to slip casting methods and workflows
→ carry out a small amount of test casting during the session to observe early results
→ take home a container of slip to use once moulds have dried fully
All mould-making materials are included.
What’s not included
This workshop does not include firing or finished ceramic outcomes.
Because the moulds will still be wet during the session, any casting done on the day is exploratory rather than optimal. The emphasis is on understanding process, timing, and decision-making, rather than producing resolved objects.
Participants are encouraged to complete casting at home, once their moulds are properly conditioned.
