Coming Soon!

We’re currently developing a range of online courses. Our digital courses are intended to help guide you through a few clay basics and promote a bit of lateral thinking. Our online resources compliment studio life: filling a few gaps and inspiring new journeys.

They are taking us a while, we’ve been experimenting, and there are a few logistical challenges to work out. Take a look at our first attempts at video production…

TECHNIQUES AND PROCESSES

Session 1 - Dig for Clay (Part 1)

What is clay? Where does it come from?

Discover where clay comes from, how to identify and refine it and what we mean by plasticity. Learn how to reclaim clay and terminology to describe working (and not working) stages clay. Start to build a basic tool kit. Nothing goes to waste.

Session 2 - Dig for Clay (Part 2)

All unfired unwanted and damaged pots and scraps can be reclaimed. Reclaiming clay is part or our daily routine at the studio. Nothing goes to waste. Slurry is captured, trimmings collected and dead pots sacrificed to the slop bucket and reused. In this session we take you through the reclaiming process. Use the same process to condition found clay to make it workable - ready for use later.

Share your successes and failures on instagram under the hashtag #DigForClay.

CREATIVE PROGRAMME

Session 1 - Tap Centre Challenge

Learn how to tap centre… Tap centring allows a potter to bring a pot quickly to the middle of a potter’s wheel, ready to start turning. Turning involves removing unwanted clay to refine forms, add foot rings and to thin walls. It's usually done when clay is leatherhard. By tapping the pot from a fixed point, as it spins on the wheel, we can bring it onto centre.

Using a reel of masking tape we can practice the key techniques of tap centring without destroying a bunch of pots.

Watch our short film for a demonstration of tap centring and further instructions.

As most of you will not have a wheel... here's your opportunity to get creative!

You'll need to improvise. Source something with sufficient momentum. It doesn't need to be powerful, round or uber fast.

If you have a Potter’s Wheel, now’s your opportunity to show off.

Make things more difficult by stacking many objects as tall as you can.
